ZSL London Zoo keeper for the day - AMAZING !!!!

I've just come back from being a zoo keeper for the day at ZSL London Zoo. What an amazing experience and what life long memories. I first went here 5 years ago as a normal guest and loved it then. Seeing all the improvements was great, they really work hard at enhancing and changing their enclosures for the animals.

I was given this experience as a Christmas present and could not be more happy with the day. As a total animal lover the day spending with the animals got me completely potty ! ( I'm a 30 year old man) so trying to contain my excitement was difficult, though I need not fear as the rest of my group were equally excited, well almost. Mick the zoo's senior keeper was our guide for the day and was more than amazing, he made the day for all of us, a great people person as well as obviously an animal person.

We swept the zebra enclosure, saw behind the scenes in the aquarium, feeding some of the large fish with locus and earth worms which was very interesting. We also spent time in the penguin exhibit which was really lovely, helping to clean their environment and walking around with them.

I hand fed the giraffes, lemurs, meerkats, colobus monkeys, bearded pigs, and helped prepare the bearded pigs dinner. That required us to look at their menu and collect all the fruit and veg and chop it up according to their menu, very cool ! We also went in with the ten coatis they have there and whilst sitting down they were fed some food. This got them very excited and they started to use us as a climbing frame. I could have spent a few hours with them, all climbing over me and being so inquisitive, I was beaming from ear to ear ! We also got information about all the animals which we passed, the listed buildings in the park and conservation which the keepers do both in the zoo and around the world, so much more than I ever imagined.

We were provided morning and afternoon drinks and snacks as well as lunch. With secure lockers for our belongings and a nice t-shirt which we wore over our jumpers/shirts.

This really was an amazing experience and all the staff were so kind and informative to us.

Again huge huge thanks to Mick, your enthusiasm, care and kindness to us and the animals shone through the day and it was amazing to spend the day with you.

I have life long memories and well as a few hundred photos to remember the day and I still cant stop smiling ! I will be back in the next few years, though as a normal paying guest.

BEHIND THE BARS AT LONDON ZOO

This experience definately exceeded my expectations. We mucked out zebras and penguins and prepared food for wild pigs. But most exciting of all was the close contact with giraffe, lemurs, llamas, monkeys and tigers! Behind the scenes in the Aquarium was surprisingly fascinating.. The Keeper who looked after us was extremely knowledgable and looked after us well. We also had opportunities to talk to other Keepers. A day that I will remembeer for a long time - I might even do it again!

UNBELIEVABLE EXPERIENCE

I received this experience as a Christmas present and booked it in February. From zoo-keeper duties like cleaning out the zebras and preparing feed for the bearded pigs to hand-feeding tigers and having a penguin attached to my shoe-laces, my most fabulous highlight had to be feeding the lemurs... you sit in their enclosure and they jump all over you grasping your fingers while shovelling grapes down their furry necks - such a surreal, amazing moment. Myself and the other 2 keepers-for-a-day got to do a lot more than what was stated on the info page as well, including feeding pirannhas with a behind scene tour of the aquariu!! I would state to anyone who was interested - just do it! You would not regret it!

What to expect on your Zoo Keeper Day

[shareaholic app=”share_buttons” id=”21114081″]

A once in a lifetime experience, at a world famous zoo is what you can expect from a ZSL London Zoo Keeper Day! Instead of seeing all of your favourite animals from a distance, this special day makes it possible for you to muck in with actual zoo keepers and see the inner workings of a zoo. And where better but at one of the oldest conservation parks in the UK?

Zoo keeping as you can imagine involves feeding and caring for all of the animals in a park. As some of the animals that you will encounter can be dangerous the first part of your zoo keeping day will be to get a safety briefing. During the briefing you will also be given an outline of the day ahead and meet the zoo keeper(s) who will be looking after you and any other ‘trainees’ in attendance. Also you will most likely be given overalls to wear (although they do say to bring practical outdoor clothing with you) as zoo keeping can be mucky work, and you will be expected to get your hands dirty, because in order to feed animals (what many think of as a highlight of this experience) the enclosures they live in need to be cleaned first. But don’t worry this isn’t a hard labour camp, it’s just part of making the experience as authentic as possible, and joining in with what an actual zoo keeper has to do during their day.

Once you have been briefed and you have debriefed yourself into some overalls as well…there is no time to waste, as zoo keeping is busy work! You’ll learn how to prepare the foods for various fussy eaters, you’ll also get a chance to be involved in enrichment activities the animals are provided with and possibly even help devise some new ones, and you will muck out enclosures but then also have the delightful experience of getting up close to your favourites and feeding them. At some point during all of this, you will be provided with refreshments and lunch and at the end of the day you will be presented with an exclusive Keeper For A Day t-shirt. This is an amazing day for any animal lover, something they will always remember.
